Orientalism in the Online and Digital Age: Challenges and Opportunities” DOI:https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17263939
Abstract
Orientalist scholarship has historically engaged with Islamic texts, history, and civilization through classical methods such as the study of manuscripts, colonial archives, and academic circles. However, in the 21st century, Orientalism has entered a new phase shaped by digital technologies and online platforms. This paper examines how the internet, digital libraries, online databases, and social media have transformed the ways in which Islam and Islamic sciences are studied, interpreted, and represented in the contemporary era.
The research focuses on the following key aspects:
- New interpretations of Islamic texts and history through online resources.
- The role of Orientalists in digital academic projects (e.g., Qur’anic Corpus, Hadith Digital Archives).
- Traces of digital Orientalism in Islamophobic narratives and Western academic discourse.
- Opportunities and limitations for Muslim scholars in utilizing digital resources for research and representation.
The study argues that while digital Orientalism offers broader accessibility, innovative tools, and new research possibilities, it simultaneously carries risks of biased interpretations, misrepresentation, and Islamophobic tendencies. Therefore, it is essential for Muslim academics to critically engage with these digital platforms and actively contribute authentic, balanced perspectives to the global discourse on Islam in the digital age.
