Abstract

This study examines the challenges of translating the phonetic meanings associated with phonetic correspondence (mushākalah) in the Holy Qur'an. It aims to explain the role of phonetic features in shaping Qur'anic meaning and highlighting its rhetorical and aesthetic dimensions. The study discusses the major difficulties translators face in conveying these phonetic meanings into other languages due to differences in phonological systems and expressive features. It also reviews the efforts of translators to approximate these meanings, with particular focus on repetition and sound rhythm, through an analytical comparison between selected Qur'anic verses and their translations. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach and concludes that, although translation can successfully convey the general meaning of the Qur'anic text, it cannot fully reproduce its original phonetic and rhetorical effect. Therefore, phonetic meanings remain among the greatest challenges in translating the Holy Qur'an.
