"The Representational (Analogical) Simile and Its Impact on Meaning Generation in Abbasid Poetry"DOI:https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17461140
الملخص
Similitude-based analogy (representational simile) is one of the most refined rhetorical devices in Arabic poetry, characterized by its deep meaning and its power to merge intellectual and imaginative elements within a vivid image. This form of simile flourished during the Abbasid era, a period marked by cultural expansion and artistic creativity among poets.
It is based on comparing one complete image to another, where the relation between the two generates new layers of meaning beyond the literal sense. Through the analysis of poetic examples by Abu Tammam, Al-Buhturi, and Al-Mutanabbi, it becomes clear that this type of simile was not merely ornamental but a means of semantic generation and artistic expression.
The representational simile contributes to meaning formation through its suggestive power and the interaction between words and images, producing multiple levels of emotional and intellectual significance. Thus, in Abbasid poetry, the representational simile emerges as a structural and aesthetic tool essential to the construction of poetic meaning and the revelation of the poet’s vision.
